  5.     Betty Shapiro, 74, is an outgoing widow with four
  6. grandchildren, three daughters and a former stockbroker named
  7. Doris Edelman whom she considered her "fourth daughter." But a
  8. three-member panel from the American Arbitration Association has
  9. concluded that Betty Shapiro's fourth daughter took Mom to the
  10. cleaners. Edelman bought and sold millions of dollars of mutual
  11. funds on Shapiro's account, generating some $200,000 in sales
  12. charges and commissions. The panel's judgment: Edelman's
  13. employer, Prudential-Bache Securities, must pay $1 million in
  14. punitive fees and $546,769 in compensation to Shapiro.

  16.     The company (now called Prudential Securities) vows to
  17. appeal, terming the decision "erroneous." Shapiro's complaint
  18. is but one of a host facing Prudential, as irked investors seem
  19. more ready then ever to confront the securities industry. From
  20. 1988 to 1990, the American Arbitration Association intervened
  21. in 1,316 such cases.
